I do not enjoy peak hour bus rides. It's not so much the crowd, as much as the ignorance. I hate seeing healthy kids take up seats reserved for elderly and disabled people. I am no stranger to telling kids to move, so that old people can sit. I did this three times this morning.
After the third woman sat down, she had someone tap me on the shoulder. We had this conversation:
"You're the young lady that gave me the seat?"
"Yeah, why?"
"That was very sweet of you. Take this, it's my most prized possession. I'm a teacher."
She handed me a very fancy pen.
"Oh, you don't have to do that. You should just be able to sit down on the bus."
"Take it. You know, it's mightier than the sword."
She winked at me and turned back around.
The pen was red. I laughed about that later. A teacher just gave me a red pen for correcting a social mistake.
